FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING

Four essential areas of development guide every experience within The Beginning

SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Secure relationships are where learning begins.

Through responsive caregiving and meaningful interactions, infants develop trust, attachment, emotional security, and an emerging awareness of themselves and others.

Children are supported as they begin to:

  • Build secure relationships with trusted caregivers

  • Express and regulate emotions with adult support

  • Develop a growing sense of self

  • Engage socially through smiles, sounds, gestures, and play

  • Experience predictable, responsive routines

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Curiosity is the beginning of discovery.

Through exploration, repetition, sensory experiences, and play, infants begin developing the thinking skills that form the foundation for future learning.

Children are supported as they begin to:

  • Explore cause and effect

  • Develop attention and memory

  • Investigate objects using their senses

  • Recognize familiar people, objects, and routines

  • Experiment, problem-solve, and make discoveries through play

LANGUAGE & COMMUNICATION

Every interaction is an opportunity for communication

Through conversation, songs, stories, gestures, and responsive exchanges, infants build the foundations for receptive and expressive language.

Children are supported as they begin to:

  • Respond to familiar voices and sounds

  • Communicate needs through sounds, gestures, and emerging words

  • Develop receptive language and understanding

  • Participate in back-and-forth interactions

  • Build early vocabulary through everyday experiences

PHYSICAL & MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

Movement opens the door to exploration.

Through safe movement, sensory experiences, and opportunities to practice emerging skills, infants build strength, coordination, body awareness, and increasing independence.

Children are supported as they begin to:

  • Develop head, neck, and core strength

  • Practice reaching, grasping, and manipulating objects

  • Build balance, coordination, and body awareness

  • Progress through developmentally appropriate movement

  • Explore their environment with increasing independence

THE DONALDSON APPROACH

Intentional learning, thoughtfully woven into the infant’s day.

LEARNING THROUGH ROUTINES

The everyday moments matter.

Feeding, diapering, rest, arrival, departure, and transitions are not interruptions to learning—they are part of it.

The Beginning provides educators with intentional ways to use familiar caregiving routines to support language, connection, independence, sensory awareness, and cognitive development while preserving the responsive, individualized care infants need.

In Practice

A diaper change becomes a language lesson.
An educator narrates what is happening, names body parts and clothing, responds to the infant’s sounds and expressions, and pauses for back-and-forth interaction.

A bottle becomes a relationship-building moment.
Eye contact, responsive conversation, gentle touch, and attention to the infant’s cues strengthen attachment while supporting early communication.

Floor play becomes an invitation to discover.
Thoughtfully placed materials encourage reaching, rolling, grasping, movement, curiosity, and problem-solving.

INTENTIONAL EXPERIENCES

Purposeful invitations to learn, designed for the youngest learners.

SENSORY DISCOVERY

Gentle opportunities to explore texture, sound, light, movement, and cause and effect through developmentally appropriate sensory experiences.

LANGUAGE & CONNECTION

Songs, stories, conversations, gestures, and responsive interactions intentionally woven throughout the day to nurture early communication.

MOVEMENT & EXPLORATION

Thoughtfully designed experiences that encourage reaching, grasping, rolling, crawling, coordination, spatial awareness, and confident exploration.

Experiences are designed to be adapted to each infant’s developmental stage, interests, cues, and individual rhythm.

GROWING WITH THE CHILD

Development unfolds at its own pace. The curriculum should, too.

EARLY INFANCY

Birth - 6 Months

Connection comes first.

During the earliest months, learning is rooted in secure relationships, responsive caregiving, and sensory discovery. Experiences are gentle, individualized, and woven naturally into an infant’s rhythms of feeding, rest, movement, and interaction.

Experiences support infants as they begin to:

  • Build trust and attachment with familiar caregivers

  • Track faces, objects, light, and movement

  • Respond to voices, sounds, touch, and facial expressions

  • Strengthen head, neck, and core control

  • Reach, grasp, kick, and explore purposeful movement

  • Discover the world through safe sensory experiences

EMERGING EXPLORERS

6 - 12 Months

Curiosity begins to lead the way.

As infants become increasingly mobile and engaged with their surroundings, learning expands through movement, exploration, repetition, and interaction. Educators create safe opportunities for infants to investigate their environment while remaining a secure and responsive presence.

Experiences support infants as they begin to:

  • Sit, reach, roll, crawl, pull, and move with increasing control

  • Explore objects through touch, movement, and manipulation

  • Develop early cause-and-effect understanding

  • Respond to familiar words, gestures, songs, and routines

  • Engage in back-and-forth social interactions

  • Build persistence through exploration and simple problem-solving

GROWING INDEPENDENCE

12 - 18 Months

Growing capability inspires growing independence.

As infants approach toddlerhood, experiences encourage greater autonomy, communication, movement, and purposeful exploration. Educators provide appropriate choices and challenges while maintaining the responsive relationships and predictable routines young children still rely upon.

Experiences support infants as they begin to:

  • Walk, climb, carry, push, pull, and navigate their environment

  • Communicate through gestures, sounds, signs, and emerging words

  • Follow simple directions and participate in familiar routines

  • Experiment with early problem-solving and cause and effect

  • Develop independence through simple choices and self-help experiences

  • Engage in imitation, early pretend play, and increasingly intentional social interaction

Development is individual. Age ranges provide a framework for responsive planning rather than a prescribed timeline for development.

WHAT EDUCATORS RECIEVE

Everything educators need to bring The Beginning to life with intention and confidence.

EDUCATOR GUIDES

The why behind every experience.

Thoughtfully written guidance helps educators understand the developmental purpose behind each experience, recognize opportunities for learning, and respond intentionally to the individual infants in their care.

OBSERVATION & REFLECTION TOOLS

Notice more. Understand more. Plan with purpose.

Simple observation and reflection tools help educators document emerging skills, recognize individual interests and developmental patterns, and use what they notice to thoughtfully guide future experiences.

DEVELOPMENTAL EXPERIENCES

Purposeful learning, ready to bring to life.

Developmentally appropriate experiences across sensory exploration, language, movement, cognition, and social-emotional development provide educators with meaningful ways to extend learning throughout the day.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Learning continues through partnership.

Ready-to-use family resources help educators communicate what children are experiencing, share the developmental purpose behind classroom learning, and offer simple ways families can extend connection and discovery at home.

ROUTINE-BASED LEARNING

Because caregiving is curriculum.

Practical guidance transforms feeding, diapering, rest, transitions, arrival, and departure into meaningful opportunities for connection, communication, independence, and development.

PLANNING RESOURCES

Structure without rigidity.

Flexible planning tools help educators intentionally prepare experiences while preserving the responsive, individualized approach infants need. Resources support thoughtful preparation without prescribing a one-size-fits-all daily schedule.

The Beginning gives educators a framework—not a script.

Every resource is designed to support professional judgment, responsive caregiving, and intentional teaching while honoring each infant’s individual development.

LEARNING BEGINS IN RELATIONSHIP

Every interaction is an opportunity to nurture connection, curiosity, and growth.
